STEGOSAURUS
(STEG-oh-sawr-us)
Stegosaurus lived about
140 million years ago. Its name means "Roofed Reptile" because of the
two rows of 2 foot high, 1 inch thick plates along its back. On its tail
the Stegosaurus had four large spikes. Its spikes were up to 3 feet high,
and Stegosaurus would swing its spiky tail at enemies for protection.
Being a plant-eater it had small, blunt teeth in the back of its jaws.
Stegosaurus measured
up to 30 feet long. So it was the same length as a Triceratops. Even with
the tremendous size of Stegosaurus, it only weighed about 2 tons which
is about the same weight as a hippopotamus.
Would you believe that
a dinosaur this large had a brain that was only the size of a walnut?
