VELOCIRAPTOR
(vel-O-si-RAP-tor)
Velociraptor lived about
75 million years ago. It was a very aggressive meat-eater who chased small
mammals and young dinosaurs. Velociraptor means "Speedy Predator," which
comes from the speed at which he could attack his prey.
Velociraptor was not
very large, only about 6 feet long from head to tail. This would have
made it about the same height as an ostrich. It had four razor-sharp claws
on each foot, one of them very large and hook-like. With its claws and
about 30 very sharp teeth it would stab, slash and bite its prey to death.
Velociraptor, believed to have been one of the most intelligent dinosaurs,
usually hunted in packs and attacked from all directions.
Velociraptor was so agile that it could attack its prey while standing
on one leg.
